RECENT NEWS AND UPDATES

-- 7/26/08 --

Bilgemunky.com Updates:

- Loads and loads of new reviews, starting with two fine books - The Buccaneer's Realm and Pirate Ghosts and Phantom Ships.

- Several clothing reviews, all of them good. We've a fun new Singapore Hat from Captain Jack's Pirate Hats, some fine pirate shoes from C&D Jarnagin, and extraordinary custom hat from Pyrate Leatherworx, a most excellent - and very modern - pirate shirt fromSea Wolf Clothing, and a wonderful coat from Silhouettes Clothing.

- Music reviews, featuring Cutlass, Cannon, and Curves by the Jolly Rogers, Marooned by Marooned, Pirates of the East Coast of the Americas & the Caribbean Sea by Roy Metté, and Poet & Pirate Overtures by Skip Henderson.

- The Pirate Furniture Company submitted a new pirate table for review, and if you've need of some pirate artwork for your walls, we also checked out some Pirate Mermaid Prints.

- And as it wouldn't be an update without at least one rum review, check out Pirate's Choice - Molasses Reef.

Pirate News:

- Several headlines worth checking out:

Bilgemunky.com Updates:

- Loads of new pirate music reviews posted! We have CDs from Bone Island Buccaneers, Bounding Main, The Brigands, The Pirates Charles, and also the extraordinary compilations, Lafitte's Return Volumes 1 and 2.

- Two book reviews: If a Pirate I Must Be and Radiance&Shadows.

- Two game reviews: the very neat minted-coin pirate game Pieces of Eight and Disney's latest MMO, Pirates of the Caribbean Online.

- Hey, I finally tasted and reviewed a true CUBAN rum! And hey, it wasn't all that - Havana Club 15.

- And last - but certainly not least - we have a fun new fan art submission from Aedon.

Pirate News:

- If you're anywhere near southeastern Wisconsin, be sure and check out the Cruzan Rum Tasting, being a benefit for the Port Washington Pirate Festival. Yours truly will be hosting a workshop table on fine-tuning your palette so's to better appreciate top shelf rums.

- Too wonderful for words: Wolves of the Sea.

- And while we're on piratey YouTube videos, this one is also worth checking out Mägo de Oz's La costa del silencio and La Rosa de los Vientos (thks Dillon!)

Bilgemunky.com Updates:

Behind schedule? Always. But still we're hitting the ground running for 2008 with news and reviews galore! Three books this round, including a graphic novel that traces the career of none other than Blackbeard the Pirate, the fun-for-all ages activity book Pirateology, and the somewhat disappointing Pirate of Panther Bay.

- Also reviewed one clothing item, a Sailor's Short Jacket from Reconstructing History, along with FOUR pirate albums - all of them winners in their own respects. Check out the very latest from The Ben Gunn Society, Captain Dan and the Scurvy Crew, Captain Darby O'Bill and his Matees 3, and The Pirates of New Providence.

- If you only buy one functional pirate item this year, you'd do yourself a real favor if you make it a Bottell from Leather Lore. I'd recommend filling it with Coyopa Rum. As for Cartavio 12 Year or Rogue Spirits Dark rums? Not so much.

- Be sure and visit the Bilgemunky Fan Art page to see the most incredible rendition of Bilgemunky yet!

- Anyone thinking of dying their period clothing might learn a lot from Bilgemunky's Dye Adventure.

- An anyone interested in Pirate Core music might enjoy my upcoming presentation, Pirate Core: Sea Chanties in the 21st Century. You can catch it at the Chicago Maritime Festival this February.

Pirate News:

- The Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy is complete (well, maybe), but that doesn't mean 2008 won't have it's share of pirate films. At this time, three major releases are scheduled, and they include something for all age groups! For the young, Veggie Tales: The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything looks to be great fun. For the mature, Pirates of the Great Salt Lake is finally due to hit theaters this spring. And for the very, very mature, Pirates 2: Stagnetti's Revenge promises to be a fitting sequel to what was one of the most elaborate and most acclaimed adult films of all time - and piratey to boot.

- Pirates of the Burning Sea is due to go live this month. It's been a long, long time coming, but the final product does indeed appear to be a real marvel.

- But if you're like me and only have limited time for playing online games, the simpler, but still very piratey and fun Pirates of the Caribbean Online might be more your speed. It doesn't have nearly the versatility or elegance of Burning Sea, but as a gaming novice I find it highly enjoyable.

- A few piratey news stories of note: Pirate Pants seem to be coming into fashion thanks to Johnny Depp and friends, the Florida Weekly observed that pirates were "extremists all", News Press.com covered the story of a man who's done his best to live a pirate life, and The Jamaica Observer offered a fairly standard but still enjoyable article on piracy in general.

Bilgemunky.com Updates:

- Reviewed the book Quelch's Gold, and a waistcoat from Flying Canoe Traders. Also reviewed two pirate games - a truly exception deck of playing cards called Pegleg Pete's Deck of Royal Rogues, and checked out the new incarnation of the Pirates Constructable Strategy game, titled Pirates of the Cursed Seas.

- Reviewed to excellent pieces of pirate jewelry - a pendant from Mad Jack's Pirate Jewelry, and the offical ring of Studio City Tattoo. And on the miscellaneious front, we have reviews of some neat Metal Pirate Doubloons, and (hooray), the Hot Pirate Babes 2007 Calendar!

- Updated two reviews. I finally got a decent bottle of Sea Wynde to try. And I also figured it was time to looke at The Pyrates Way Magazine from a larger, whole-year perspective, rather then juding it strictly by its first issue.

Pirate News:

- The excellent maritime singing sextet Bounding Main is looking to get themselves ousted from the US - and you can help!

- This has little to do with pirates in the way WE love them, but I do enjoy the title: French pirates snub local product.

- Pirates of the Burning Sea - an MMORPG that's been "coming soon" for five years now - has just encountered another setback: PotBS Pre-Order Update. Fortunately this only affects the pre-orders, and shouldn't impact the January 20th launch (finally!) This game has been a long time coming, and despite the setbacks, it still looks like a marvel. I'm counting the days!

- Also on the Pirates of the Burning Sea front, it's been declared the official game of Talk Like a Pirate Day! And what's more, players will be able to come across the holiday's beloved founders, Cap'n Slappy and Ol' Chumbucket, ingame during their travles (Bilgemunky advises the lady players to not stand too close!) Read all about it at MPOGD.com!

Bilgemunky.com Updates:

- I know it's been far too long since the last batch of updates. Bilgemunky Radio has kept me very busy, as have other piratey endeavors this summer. But speaking of Bilgemunky Radio, make sure to check out the new look of the best pirate radio show on earth!

- Rum reviews aplenty this month. Appleton Extra is a very decent rum for those who enjoy a little brutality now and then, while Old Monk XXX is somewhat sweeter. El Dorado 25 Year is decent, but wildly overpriced, and Santero Ron 21 Años is brilliant yet strangely elusive.

- Plenty of music revies this time around as well, including some very fine offerings from The Seadogs, Toucan Pirates, and The Whiskey Bards. But of particular note would be Guano & Nitrates by The Valparaiso Men's Chorus, being a wonderfully unique album that I highly recommend.

- Book reviews this month are comprised of The Pirate Primer, which is certainly required reading for anyone wishing to properly talk in pirate-ese. The Republic of Pirates and Empire of Blue Water are also both wonderfully worthwhile.

- Also have a new editorial (shock! gasp!), which I've titled Pirate Master and the Death of Piracy.

Pirate News:

Sadly, there's probably been loads of exciting news items that I've neglected to post, and now they've either become out of date, or I've forgotten them. But here are a few mentionables of interest :)

- Being as the preview has numerous scenes lifted from Pirates of the Caribbean, I can't say I have high hopes for Pirates of Ghost Island.

- Finally, a definitive way to determine who's better - pirates or ninjas: Dodgeball!

Bilgemunky.com Updates:

- Enormous updates this month (since I'm so far behind after spending my time preparing for and attending pirate festivals), starting with rum! I finally reviewed several rums that, frankly, I've been afraid of (and not without reason, it would seem.) 10 Cane actually turned out to be rather decent, but Bacardi Select and Mount Gay Eclipse failed to surpass my low expectations.

- Two new pirate books, both worth checking out. Caribbean Pirates: A Treasure Chest of Fact, Fiction, and Folklore is a wonderful and fun resource for anyone looking to learn more about pirates after falling in love with the recent movies, while The Government Manual for New Pirates is very entertaining no matter what your exact interest in piracy.

- Had the priveledge of checking out another one of Captain Jack's fantastic hats, this time being the Skallywagg Limited Edition (complete with musket holes.) Also, relatively new on the scene, is To Be A Pirate.com. I checked out their pirate skirt and blouse.

- Being such a fan of Captain Jack's Pirate Hats, I was thilled to check out one of the very first items generated by his newest business - that being a collapsible camp stool from pirate furniture company. And also just in, from another tried&true favorite company, sailor bags from Flying Canoe Traders.

- Loads of movie reviews - many of which have been sitting on my desk for a shameful number of months: Blackbeard's Ghost, Muppet Treasure Island, and Yellowbeard are all great fun. The Adventures of Long John Silver is fairly mediocre. And, just in case you're actually waiting for my opinion before seeing it for yourself, I've finally posted my review of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.

- Linked the Sea Wolf Trading Company, a very fun pirate shop that I recently visited in California.

Pirate News:

- Seriously, it's a crime that I've never mentioned the Pirates Constructable Strategy Game. True, I've never played it - but you don't need to to enjoy this. The cards literally punch out into parts that can be assembled into the neatest little ships you've ever seen. I have a small fleet myself from one of their earlier editions. And now I have several fun new ships from their latest line, Pirates at Ocean's Edge (including a giant, ship-eating shark!). But even more exciting, I've just looked at their website for the first time, and discovered they have a whole piratey online game brewing! Definitely worth exploring.

- A small bit of piratey excitement in southwester Florida: Deputies cite 'pirates' for camping on island.

-- 5/11/07 --

- While it's not quite the usual fare for Bilgemunky News Items, there's something intriguing about Pirates of the Cabaret (May 19th in Salem Oregon.) Maybe it's the 30 foot sails outside, the tiki torches, cargo netting, and wooden barrels. Maybe it's the various contests with prizes, the professional Jack Sparrow impersonator MC, or the live entertainment by the Bad Fish Band. Or, oh yeah, maybe it's that the whole affair takes place at a strip club, where all the staff will be dressed in sexy pirate gear, and Devon - known for her role in Pirates, A Joone Film - will be performing two shows (as will other lovely ladies, including snake and fire dances.) Loads more going on that I won't even try to cover here, so head to www.myspace.com/starscabaret to learn all about it.

- Drink rum for a good cause! The Wine Specialist is holding a FREE Patron Spirits tasting to benefit the Children's Cancer Fund. Enjoy everything from Patron's line of rums and tequilas, right up to their premium Gran Patron Platinum Tequila, and the much coveted Pyrat Cask 23 rum (these require a small donation [$5 minimum]). Any interested parties that will be in the D.C. area on May 18th are invited to attend from 5-8 p.m. (2115 M St. NW, Washington DC 20037.) Any questions can be directed to jamie(at)winespecialist.com.

Bilgemunky.com Updates:

- Loads of reviews this update, including three new books: The Captains Marshall: A Promise of Freedom is a fun and original exploration into female piracy, Pirates of the Oregon Coast is a sadly lackluster mix of fact and fantasy, and Cap'n Billy 'The Butcher' MacDougall's Guide to Pirate Parenting is just plain enjoyable. And, while it's not exactly a book, you'll also want to check up on the Hot Pirate Babes 2007 Calendar

- Reviewed the new CD from Rustmoster, The Last Voyage of the Black Betty, which has immediately become one of my favorite albums in recent history.

- If you're looking for a truly unique eyepatch, check out the latest review of Pyrate Leatherworx. Or if you just require a new vessel to swill rum, Captain Goldtooth's Pirate Goblet may serve you well. But if you already have a fine vessel, but it's the rum that be lackin', then consider Gosling's Family Reserve. Maui Dark is also a worthy option, but one I wouldn't recommend to the less adventurous among you.

- Linked two fantastic pirate businesses, having learned of them at PyrateCon - Arrr Pirate Treasures is a fun site to check for your pirate basic necessities, and Ye Old Tattoo Shoppe is the place to go when you're ready to tell the world that your love of pirates is no passing fancy :)

Pirate News:

- PyrateCon was an absolute success! I had an incredible time, as did many, many others (some 750, according to CNN.) Congratulations to the fine folks at the International Pyrate Society for putting on such a fantastic event. I look forward to attending next year, and encourage others to do the same - but if you need a little extra encouragement, tune in to Bilgemunky Radio on Monday nights, when - aside from listening to great pirate music - you'll be able to hear exclusive interviews with the folks that help make the pirate word tick (artisans, publishers, writers, etc.)

- Money and Markets wants you to Invest Like a Pirate!

- The Cincinatti Museum Center will be the first stop on a five year tour for a new traveling exhibit, "Real Pirates: The Untold Story of the Whydah from Slave Ship to Pirate Ship." Hopefully it will eventually come to a museum near you, but if not - you have seven months to book it to Ohio!

Pirate News:

- Just a couple of weeks until the end of April, and the weekend of the 27-29th is the KidsPlay Pirate Fest, featuring one of my own favorite groups, Bounding Main. If you like the idea of Sea Chantey's that actual sound good (with melodies, and whatnot), and if you're in the Indiana area, this may be well worth checking out.

- June sees a new pirate festival born in Northern California, called (appropriately enough) The NorCal Pirate Festival. Taking place in the San Francisco Bay area and featuring such legendary performers as Tom Lewis, Skip Henderson, and the SeaDogs, this won't be one to miss!

- If you and the family will be in Florida this Memorial day, then Gaylord Palms Resort is offering you the opportunity to win $10,000 in Pirates Treasure Hunt Challenge. And even if you don't win, you still get to do lots of piratey stuff!

- And finally, one last reminder for next weekend (April 20th-ish) - SEE YOU AT PYRATECON IN NEW ORLEANS!!!

-- 3/31/07 --

Bilgemunky.com Updates:

- Posted several new book reviews. We have the most excellent The Legend of La Tormenta for the grownups, and Little Pirate and His Pirate Hat for the wee-ones. We also have Pirate Fever!, which was not so excellent, I'm afraid.

- Reviewed Jack Tar Superior Rum, which I heartily recommend.

- Reviewed a fine Flask and Pouch combo from Pyrate Leatherworx, and a lovely grog jug from Quicksilver's Pirate Pots.

Pirate News:

- Summer's coming, which means pirate festival season will soon be upon us! But for my money, I think the best way to kick things off will be this April in New Orleans at PyrateCon. No, they're not paying me to plug it - I'm just really excited about this one. Check out their website, and I think you'll be excited too!

- The internet is once again flooded with rumors of more Pirates of the Caribbean sequels (beyond this summer's #3, that is.) But less noticed is a non-Disney pirate flick coming out of the major studios. It's a comedy from the director of "Click" (shudder), and you can read about it yourself.

- I found a website for a pirate restaraunt in Maryland called Piratz Tavern. Might be worth checking out, if you're in the neighborhood.
